Coaches’ Guide

 

       For coaches and teams to be properly prepared, each person needs to be aware of the policies and procedures of the Great Southwest Bible Bowl. The following information is a guide for at home and at the bowl.

 

I.     Before the bowl

       A.   Team organization

              1.    Each team has four members with no alternates.

              2.    Each student will be identified at the bowl by an assigned code number. Each participant is to use the same four-digit number through the day.

              3.    Team members will sit in the same seat during testing.

       B.   Study

              1.    Study books may be available through Bible Learn, PO Box 38372, Dallas, TX 75238 for a minimal fee. John Kimbrough writes and sells study books. Phone (214) 349-3441.

              2.    Any method of study that best suits you/your students is allowable.

       C.   Bibles

              1.    Each student must have a copy of the New International Version.

              2.    Bibles or photocopies may be marked or color-coded in any way.

              3.    No paper of any kind may be added to a Bible or copy used in testing.

              4.    Photocopies of the Bible text are allowed. (See Rule VII.B.)

              5.    Quote listings are not allowed.

              6.    Concordances are not allowed to be used.

       D.   What to bring

              1.    EACH PARTICIPANT IS TO BRING A BIBLE. (Extras are not provided by the Great Southwest Bible Bowl. Coaches may need to bring an extra.)

              2.    Dress is casual. Jeans and tennis shoes are fine.

 

II.    At the bowl

       A.   Registration

              1.    Coaches are to report at the registration desk to pick up team packets. Changes will be made from 8:00 to 8:50 the day of the bowl.

                     (Note: Registration is a one-step procedure.)

              2.    At registration you will declare your team divisions. 1 team = 4 individual students. There are no adult teams. You may declare any combination at registration.

              3.    Lunch is provided for bowl participants and their coaches.

       B.   Testing

              1.    Teams are to arrive no later than 8:30 A.M.

              2.    Time limitations are part of the testing procedure.

              3.    All participants of all divisions receive the same tests.

              4.    Coaches are responsible to have their teams in their places on time for each round. If a team member is not in their seat when the test begins, they will miss that round.

              5.    Participants may not consult at any time during the testing.

              6.    Study questions may not be used in any part of the testing.

              7.    Only Bible TEXT may be used during testing. Students may not use concordances, maps, or any other study aids. No added paper of any kind may be inside or on a Bible during testing.

              8.    In each round, each student receives the questions in written form. Questions will not be asked orally.

              9.    If cheating or the appearance of cheating is understood by a quiz master or monitor to have occurred, the student will receive a score of zero in the round. Judgment of the official is final and not subject to discussion.

              10.  Final scores at the end of the day determine levels of proficiency for teams and individuals.

                     a.    Team scores are determined by performance in Rounds 1-5.

                     b.    Individual scores are determined by performances in Rounds 1-5.

                     c.    Scholarship Round will be added to individual score to determine scholarship winners.

              11.  No student is allowed to take tests early for any reason.

       C.   Test Results - Team answer sheets and keys to quizzes will be available after the awards assembly.

       D.   Inform the bowl director of students with special needs on registration form.

 

III.   Scholarship Round:

       A.   The scholarship round is open for all 7-12 grade students and adults. However, only those in the 9-12 grades are eligible for scholarships .

       B.   The scholarships are decided by combining the total scores of Rounds 1-5 and the Scholarship Round. Scholarships are as follows:   1st Place $500, 2nd Place $300, 3rd Place $200.

       C.   Scholarship round scores are included in the adult division in determining awards.

 

IV.  After the meet

       A.   Each congregation is encouraged to give special recognition to its Bible Bowl students in a congregational setting.

       B.   Please let us know how the meet went. This is the only way that we can make the meet better next year.

 

Bible Bowl Rules

 

I.     Participation:

       A.   There are four (4) fields of participation: Elementary, Junior High, Senior High, and Adult.

              1.    Each Elementary teams consists of 4 students in Grades 4 through 6.

              2.    Each Junior High teams consists of 4 students in Grades 7 through 9.

              3.    Each Senior High teams consists of 4 students in Grades 10 through 12.

              4     Adults are individuals who have completed secondary education.

       B.   Students may move up 1 or 2 fields (i.e., a 4-6 grader may participate in the 7-9 grade or 10-12 grade field, or a 7-9 grader may participate in the 10-12 grade field), but they may not move to a younger field.

       C.  If a student moves up fields, their individual results are NOT moved up fields (i.e., a 4-6 graders' scores will be included in the score for a 7-9 or 10-12 grade team, but the 4-6 grader will compete individually against the other 4-6 graders within their same division; Experienced or Inexperienced.)

        D.   Participation is divided into two (2) divisions within the Elementary and Junior High fields: Experienced and Inexperienced.

              1.    The Inexperienced division is designed to encourage those who are new to Bible Bowls by placing them in a division by themselves.

              2.    The Experienced team is a team that has two (2) or more members who meet the criteria* of experienced.

              3.    An Inexperienced team is a team which has no more than one (1) member who meets the criteria* of experienced.

              *     A contestant is considered experienced if he/she has participated in one of the following Bible Bowls: Great Southwest, National Bible Bowl, or any other Bible bowl which uses our format.

II.           Teams:

       A.   A team consists of four (4) students with no alternates.

       B.   A student may not change teams during the meet.

       C.   Congregations with students unassigned to a team may help form ad hoc teams with other congregations upon arriving at the meet or may have those students participate as individuals. All ad hoc teams will be formed by the bowl director and his staff.

III.          Areas of Participation:

       A.   Questions are presented visually on individual test sheets.

       B.   Because of limited space in the testing areas, spectators are discouraged.

       C.   All spectators who remain in the testing areas are asked to be very quiet during the testing periods.

       D.   We will ask for volunteers to help grade the tests that require hand grading.

IV.  Test Questions:

       A.   All questions will be drawn from the book(s) to be covered at the meet.

       B.   No question will call for interpretation of Bible text.

       C.   Questions are asked in random order.

       D.   Questions are worded to suit the general vocabulary of the field of participation.

       E.   Questions range in difficulty from very easy to very difficult.

VI.          Scoring:

       A.   Correct answers by each student add points to their team and individual scores.

       B.   The team and individual in each division with the largest cumulative score at the end of the meet are designated as the winners. Second and third place winners will also be recognized.

VII. Text of the Bible:

       A.   Bible Bowls are designed to encourage study of the Bible, not a specific translation. To insure fairness and simplicity, we will use the latest version of the New International Version in preparation of the bowl test.

       B.   Published, copyrighted Bibles only are allowed. Use of photocopies of the text will be permitted as long as the margins do not exceed 2" and the text is copied on both sides.

VIII.        Protests:

Any protest is to be presented to the bowl director by an adult sponsor immediately following the round of the questions(s) being protested. Protest time will be between rounds.

Description of Rounds

 

SCHOLARSHIP - For students competing for university scholarships. Youth and adults may participate. The scholarship round will be administered with no prior indication of its nature. The test will be difficult and should be taken by well-prepared students. It will be closed-Bible. There is no special registration; just be present at the announced time. Possible Score: 50Round Time: 25 minutes

 

ROUND 1 - “Race thru the text” - For all participants

Using OPEN BIBLES, participants give chapter and verse of forty (40) quotations selected in textural order of bowl text. Possible Score: 40Round Time: 30 minutes

ROUND 2 - “Know the Chapter: Headings and Events” - For all participants

WITHOUT USING BIBLES, participants will locate, by chapter number only, forty (40) general descriptions or subject headings of particular sections of Scripture.

ROUND 3 - “Know the Chapter: Quotations” - For all participants

WITHOUT USING BIBLES, participants will give chapter number only of forty (40) quotations from the assigned text of the Bible. (Quotations may be drawn from narrative or discourse.)

ROUND 4 - “Fact Finder” - For all participants

Using OPEN BIBLES, participants will answer forty (40) multiple-choice questions by marking one of the multiple-choice answers.

      Possible Score: 40                                                   Round Time: 20 minutes

ROUND 5 - “Identification” - For all participants

Using OPEN BIBLES, participants will, by marking one of five multiple-choice answers, identify forty (40) items (persons, place, things, times, numbers, etc.)

ON ARRIVAL: Coaches go to the parlor to pick up packets and designate buzzer round team members. Then, meet their group in the fellowship hall to distribute tags and numbers to students and adults taking the test. Students and sponsors go to fellowship hall for refreshments.
